headed toward La Grange Texas today, will get started, waiting on the fog to burn off... Should arrive in Austin Sat/Sun... Packed and repacked gear yesterday, worked on the bike, need to find a bike repair shop some parts require replacement before moving on West of Austin, some long stretches of highway without any services... ride has been pretty nice this morning, still on the cool side, had to sprint across some bridges, no shoulder/bike lane country store lwide shoulders 1st section of the southern tier maps i have been able to use.... Pretty nice, get use to using them and i should save on battery power stream by a picnic area i stopped at... Texas does have picnic areas to stop at, most seem to be sponsored by towns rather than the state, seen a sign at one of the picnic areas that talked about it being for the use of tourist... I think i am the rolling hills of Texas, i say think because i have always been told the hill country of Texas is west of Austin... Most of my day was spent on pretty level roads although the one i am on now going into Round Top is up and down... Round Top has an annual antique show, must be pretty big for prices are given for the anyique show period and then the rest of the year...

headed toward La Grange Texas, 66 miles from here, easy ride, no hurry, beautiful weather... I am entering an area with rolling hills, oak trees, fences, no open range here, ranches and when on top of one of those hills you can see for miles... As mentioned i start the fourth leg today moved my start to La Grange back until tomorrow. I have repacked; putting new brake pads on, and reviewing the route across Texas Austin has an in and out burger i hope i am passing!!!
Still have not tried what a burger at times last night i thought i was sleeping in the middle of a greyhound race track last night... Had dogs barking to my north, dogs barking to my south, and coyotes yelping to the east and west... Never had an audiance in such an uproar in my life... 53 miles is my objective... Really dependson the traffic and roads, stopped early yesterday for what i hope was just rush hour traffic... Maybe i will find a straighter highwsy today.. NEW WAVERLY TEXAS New Waverly is the home of the gymnastics training center operated by famed coach Béla Károlyi. HIGHWAY BETWEEN COLDSPRING AND NEW WAVERLY EXTREMELY DANGEROUS COMBINATION OF CURVES, SPEED LIMIT, SHOULDER AND TRAFFIC Knowledge to fill empty space in my head!!! Washateria is an alternate name for laundromat, especially in Texas. The first washateria so named was opened in 1936 in Fort Worth, Texas by Noah Brannen. Though steam-powered laundry machines were invented in the 19th century, their cost put them out of reach of many. Brennan and others began renting short-term use of their machines.[3] Most laundromats and washaterias in the United States are fully automated and coin-operated and generally unmanned, with many (but not all) operating 24 hours a day.[4] The United States Census Bureau estimates that there are 11,000 of this style of laundromat in the U.S., employing 39,000 people and generating over $3.4 billion every year.[ Smokey still at it!!! Sam Houston National Forest, Texas of course Richards Texas Half the town has moved on, old homes sitting empty, weeds growing as high as the street signs... One little store... With a grill so lunch it is Australian... Was taking to a man from Australia just now, he was headed east, left San Diego on 4 Jan he is headed to Saint Augustine and then down the Florida coast... He was asking about the rain, said he had not ran into any rain so far, not a drop... Hope his luck continues and maybe some of it came my way... He did say a friend picked him up 300 miles west of Houston so he did not know what the roads were like in the middle of Texas, except for the short section testerday they have been good after leaving the National Forest, passed a lake and the terrain started changing, hardwoods replacing the pines, more pasture land, not as hilly... See how long that last Taking it easy, pretty much decided to stop short of the 53 miles today, Anderson, a small town about 7 miles up the road, stop someplace on the other side of it, will give me 47-48 for the day It is 68 degrees right now, need to look at breaking out the summer clothes tomorrow old town in Anderson Texas Court House in Anderson Texas confederate memorial??? In Anderson Texas good ride today, my legs are feeling the strain from the hills and wind.. 77 degrees tomorrow, got a room tonight, Texan's like fences and gates lol
great weather today, cold last night, little frost on everything this morning... Biscuits and gravy for breakfast, sometimes you just got to suck it up and ask yourself if you are willing to wait another 25 miles to eat lol the chef looked as bad as i normally do after a few days on the road and needing a shower... Then to just watch her grab things with her hands... Oh well... calm river, here anyway, lot of birds... Sand... Even water lol what a ride, winds are not as bad as yesterday, still around 15 mph... Stopped at the Paradise Grill in Coldspring, it is busy so i am guessinh they have some decent food!!! never imagined it could be so relaxing, leaning on an old metal gate, the wind that is giving me heck while riding feeling so good now, listening to birds and watching cows... Not too bad :-) of course, bigger in Texas relaxing along the highway... I have learned that these country toads have rush hour traffic too... Sometimes that is no issue, today, well i am on a busy curvey highway... Normally the curves are not a very big issue, you can hear cars coming, now it is a steady flow of traffic... I did put new batteries in both of my flashing lights... Two dogs chased me today, i have dogs chase me every day, normally they stop at their priperty line, today they kept coming, one of the dang dogs bit my back tire, did not want to let go... Almost stopped me in my tracks, had to go into a full force pedal, standing up on the pedal, putting all my weight into it... The dog let go, kept thinking going to have a flat... Going to have a flat.... Going to have a flat... I did not have a flat... Two people just stopped to see if i was ok, guess i should move until i am ready to move on this is the first cup of coffee i have made on this trip, except for hotels and gas stations of course, 5 days shy of a month!!! Sure glad i put the stove and coffee maker to use
well i must say i enjoyed the game yesterday if for no other reason it was indoors for me... Today is suppose to be very windy, wind speed above 20 later today... Changed my plans some, was going to wait for the local post office to open and mail a few things back, i am made the final decision on what to keep for the next couple months... Microwave will go :-( Front moving in, as usual i am on the edge... See how cold it gets the next couple of days... CHUCK; you will be missed, your pain and suffering has ended... Love you!!!! time for a siesta, i have done 20+ this morning but the winds are picking up, take a break, see how they are in a couple hours, wind advisory in effect until about 7:00 pm local... wylies backwoods barbecue... Laying here, 20 miles from no place soaking up the sun; had already made a decision, relax let the wind calm down... Well i got to checking the gps and i see in the middle of no place is a barbecue place???? Now that sounds good, i was just told how good the barbecue is in this area.... So i get up, put my windbreaker, they still call them that, windbreaker?, get on my bike start to head down the highway, turned around and now i am in the exact location i was before i knew about Wylies, the only difference is i want barbecue rather than beans.... Winds are just too strong.... peanut butter was good, working on my tan, it is 1:50; guessing another hour or so it was nice thinking about bbq, lol the winds let up some so i decided ok, dinner time... Like so many other small businesses it has closed... So i stop at this little corner market for something to eat and jokingly ask about a new station going in, asked the lady if it was hers, "foreigners" parden me i said "foreigners" she replied... "We just hope they don't run us out of business" thought to myself as i looked around, they will, when just depends on how long you want to struggle and how much money you are willing to lose.... Imagine at one time the store made good money and may still do so... Could even tell that new pumps had been installed... They even have a small building outside they are putting bathrooms in... But so much of the other areas have ran down, old sign post stand with only the frame remaining, pipes sticking out of the ground where the old gas pumps use to be... Metal grates over all the windows and doors, grass sprouting up out of the cracks in the pavement... Just a matter of how long they want to fight... 25 miles from Coldspring Texas, ended up with 35 miles for the day which to me was great considering the winds, they are suppose to calm down in the next couple hours sleeping bag on a ground cover, love being able to check the forecast, sleep under the stars when i can... Simple life
little off the main drag Mama Jack's is a nice place to get a bite to eat, the type of place i had hoped to find more of as I journeyed cross country... Mama Jack's caught my attention as i walked by yesterday, it was packed... Having previously enjoyed a free meal at Sonic's i did not even need to consider an all you can eat place... Eating breakfast was enjoyable, one thing i noticed was the change in accents, now that i think about it the folks at Sonic's did not have the, i guess cajun area accent.... Winder where the transition is/was... I am hittung the cowboy hat, boots and jeans area... No coffee in my room so i had best get one to go here... Today while waiting on pregame shows i need to dry clothes, patch tubes and clean/service my bike... great breakfast, fresh food coming off the grill all the time... Having spent time around government facilities the better part of my life, and Ohio is about the same, nosmoking in public buildings, or near the entrance i am surprised at the states that still have seating for smoking/nonsmoking... States rights i agree, just believed (wrong again) states had ruled against it if for no other reason medical cost nice place to eat, good people working there... Do not know what i will do today, waitress told me about the lunch buffet menu; they will be packed... Closing time is 3:00 :-( hotel, refurbished... Has actual keys... Wonder where they found those... ;-) about 120 miles from Navasota, 240 miles from Austin, which starts the 4th leg of this journey. It continues to Del Rio Texas and is approximately 431.5 miles long. some minor repairs prior to the next leg :-)
great start to the day, i timed everything just right i hope???? Hunkered down with a small tarp i use for a ground cover under my sleeping bag covering me, sitting cross legged on the stuff bag for my sleeping bag, legs crossed, leaning against my bike which is leaning against a tree, mind you not the tallest tree in the forest, with high hopes this plan works... The rain according to radar is suppose to last an hour and by then it will be daylight:-) the plan of course is to stay drying:-) loving life!!! somedays you just get on the autobahn for cyclist snd think this is the way it should be, then an Amish with his buggy just rolls right on by you... Oh well 40 today, stopping for 2 nights so i can watch the game tomorrow!!!! I ordered to Jr double cheeseburgers, and a shake at Sonics in Kountze Texas... The young lady brought it out and said it was on them, and thanked me... Amazing DMAP i mentioned DMAP SIGNS in an earlier post, wondering what it stands for Deer Management Assistance Program sunset over a crawfish pond checking traps crawfish traps crawfisf pond boat boat bait crawfish boat When going from one Parish to another it is easy to determine not from the signs but more so the ride, oh how some of the Parish can be a real painful experience... the last place i had any food from a small diner was the rattlesnake place, i did have the pulled chicken but i have found another one, it is either real good or has not been open very long because just about every place to eat in this town is closed, boarded up?? Town of Oberlin Louisiana, food was good.... Wonder if they will be here in a year if i come back??? crawfish pond buses for returning canoers canoes just a tiny creek but several canoe rental places, posted so i could see if i can figure out what is so great about this stretch of water thst it can support close to a thousand canoes??? went over 1000 miles today!!!
