Mount Moosilauke is the first major chalkenge, about a 6 mile climb... 4000 feet increase in elevation, I have been told it is the gateway to the White Mountains... it is terrain that is the challenge, at one point I will spend 12 miles above the tree line, the issue then will be the weather, high hopes I can time it right and hit it between storms... not so concerned about cool temperatures but rain and staying dry, although I will have a dry set of clothes and I can always find a place outof the wind even if I need to build awind break... really looking forward to the challenge

Stopped in Killington Vt for the night, going to get a few supplies, shower, wash clothes and relax... the last couple of days have been in the mountains, actually got up to 4,000 feet today... really beautiful views, the birch trees at some elevations are the dominate tree, the white bark reflects the sunlight in so many different ways... green moss... large mountain streams... wind keeping things moving and clear... I say moving for the birch trees blowing in the wind is worth seeing... steep climbs and descents... the descents are hard on the knees... my knee had felt so good for almost a month now... last couple days the soreness has returned... hopefully temporary... Killington is a winter haven, talking to a local who told me 20,000 people come here for the snow every weekend... do believe Vermonts largest ski resort is here

Received some rain yesterday, at times it rained pretty hard... still the trail is not as bad as it was on 3/4 July... trail has been easy today... Some good climbs but a clean trail, not a lot of obstacles

At one time or another I read in one of the logs at a shelter that a person had seen either 74 or 78 orange salamanders in a day... while i gad no reason not to doubt him i thought that was a lot of salamanders... this morning while hiking to bear mountains peak, lot of bear mountains on this trip, i started counting orange salamanders... i was up to 41 in under 2 hours... funny that i have never really paid attention to how many i was seeing each day...

Sitting on a mountain of marble or granite at 2,800 feet looking out over a valley the beauty takes my breath away, or maybe it was the climb up to this point... Vermont has been worth every bug bite, black flies are here... nasty little insect..

Massachusetts was beautiful both entering and leaving... entering the state I descended from Bear Mountain along some of the most beautiful scenery along the trail, departing the state I climbed out of a valley along a beautiful mountain stream with cascading waterfalls, the sound of the water blended so well with the greenery... sure I encountered mud but it only added to the beauty... mountain lakes/ponds appeared out of nowhere, deer feeding along the shorelines... birds... so many birds singing songs I have never heard before made it all the better... I seen butterflies I had never seen in other parts of the country, this could simply be because I had never taken the time to enjoy what was there to be seen... rain, oh how it rained... one storm challenged my witts... the winds picked up... 50-60 miles per hour, a forest of pine and birch, branches being pruned by mother nature snapping with the sound of gunshots... dime size hail pelting me and rain giving me the clensing so needed... I endured, found a place to hang my clothes, the next day brought another challenge... mud... that seems to be the way the adventure has gone... challenges... in the beginning it was the mountains... seems like they would grow taller each day... could I climb them... soon you realize how lucky you are to climb one because soon you get to descend... then the cold... the wind... snow... now rain... mud... heat... rocks... would not change any of it... all combined to create a lasting memory that has been worth every step, fall, sore body parts, blister... 600 more miles... so much to look forward to
so many beautiful streams in Vermont
Lakes/ponds dams built by beavers, keep look for moose

Such a peaceful day
I can not begin to explain the mud... to stay out of it one must use walking sticks to find solid ground, jump rock to rock with a pack or go around...
